Careful Awareness

"When I'm not working, I am dancing or gardening. I do all three intensely. I expect my body to have a high level of functioning. So when trigger-point injections and traditional physical therapy failed to resolve a hamstring injury, my father's chiropractor recommended I see Jerry Hyman. Jerry's approach is not to see you three or four times a week, but to actually give you the exercises and education you need to heal yourself. I like that. He gave me exercises in small manageable bits that I could do throughout the day instead of spending 45 minutes at a time with many repetitions. The exercises all involve very careful awareness of the body and what it needs to operate properly. Doing them correctly makes a big difference. With Jerry's well-thought-out balance of adjustments, a little massage, and careful physical therapy, I've gotten back 95 percent of my full hamstring use."

A Good Person

"I went to Jerry because I couldn't walk without losing my balance. My posture had been affected by a bad back injury 20 years ago, and then major breast reduction surgery and breast cancer. When you have large breasts you roll your shoulders forward. Jerry helped me put my shoulders back into their sockets. He also helped me with one foot that turned in. He made me aware of a lot of things I was doing, but also aware that I could treat myself. I need to tell you how good he is as a person as well as a chiropractor. I went to see Jerry one day when I was in an emotionally unhealthy state. I had gone through eight surgeries. I didn't want to be at the appointment. But he just sat me down, pulled up a chair so our knees were touching. He talked to me for half an hour and got me straightened out emotionally. He just cares about people and about making them well."

Exercise-Induced Back Pain

"I was in excruciating, exercise-induced back pain and in my third session with Jerry, he did his thing: poking and prodding various places I thought couldn't possibly have anything to do with the pain I was experiencing. He asked me to stand up and I simply couldn't believe the transformation. I was in a better place than I'd been before I injured myself. I was literally taller — I had to adjust my car's mirrors on the ride home!"

Brian Cox,

Whatever Quirks

Years of gymnastics as a kid did a number on me. Add to that already shaky foundation a minor (but non-trivial) car accident, and a few decades of deep-rooted, learned habits, and what you get is a perfect storm of musculoskeletal dysfunction. But thanks to Jerry, I can safely say that what was once reliably frequent back pain has now been tamped down to just the occasional flare-up.

Jerry has always been adept at tailoring his treatments to the needs—and quirks—of the individual. I’m amazed by how he can see —really see—exactly what’s going on. It’s a singular talent, in my experience—one that’s perhaps outmatched only by his generosity of spirit.
